Apple must now pay a fortune for violating patents

A judge ruled that iMessage, FaceTime and other signature software violates patents held by another company;
(CNNMoney) - A judge ruled that Apple must pay damages of $ 626 million after determining that iMessage, FaceTime and other software from Apple violated patents of another company.

In a case that has been in the courts since 2012, VirnetX accused Apple of violating four of its patents, three of which are included in the new ruling, which mostly consist of methods to communicate in real time on the Internet.

It is considered that VirnetX is a "patent troll" because it is a company that owns patents that does not manufacture anything. Only 14 employees and offices rented for $ 5,000 a month. The company makes money by granting patent rights to other companies ... suing companies that, in their opinion, have infringed their intellectual property.

VirnetX owns about 80 patents, including four in which programs were based Apple. VirnetX bought them from a company called Science Applications International Corporation.

In 2012, a jury found that Apple had infringed the same patent and ordered the company to pay $ 368 million to VirnetX. Apple appealed and won on a technicality: VirnetX failed to demonstrate that consumers were buying iPads and other devices from software patents VirnetX violated.

The appeals court overturned the damages and sent the case to the District Court of Texas to be re-evaluated.

However, Apple failed exactly what I wanted. The new jury ruled Wednesday 3 February that Apple owed even more money to VirnetX because it violated "intentionally" patents of the company.

The stock price doubled VirnetX before the markets opened.

Apple subjected to review their software iMessage, FaceTime and VPN to verify that do not cover anything contained in patents VirnetX.

VirnetX has had mixed results in their previous patent claims. He reached an agreement with Microsoft for 200 million dollars (3,600 million) and filed another lawsuit against the company in 2015. However, he lost the lawsuit he filed against Cisco that year.

Facebook launch prohibit Internet access in India

Iniciativa de Facebook para llevar Internet gratis a países en desarrollo atenta contra neutralidad en la red, según empresas.

Facebook initiative to bring some free Internet services to India has been slowed by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), which announced that no company may charge different prices for access to certain content on the web.

The TRAI noted that this type of differential access is contrary to the principle of net neutrality; ie all traffic on the web is treated equally.

The agency provides for fines of up to half a million Indian rupees a day (about $ 7,353) for breach of the rule and limits the gratuity only for emergency services in emergency situations declared by the authorities, such as floods.

A spokesman for the Indian Saving Internet platform, Mitesh Ashar, said the decision "is very important because it means you are not allowed the project 'Basic Rate' Facebook ', which through a limited number of telecommunications companies intends to provide some free services in developing countries.

Ashar warned that "will have to wait to see how they react to these companies", since it is possible to use this regulation in court.

The move comes after last year Internet.org, the project aims to connect Facebook to free billions of people to the web in developing countries will face problems due to the withdrawal from the project of several companies, who considered contrary to the principle of net neutrality.

These firms warned that telephone operators could decide the applications and services that can connect users, in addition to groups of Internet users complained that represents an attempt to make it appear that Facebook and the Internet are the same.

The CEO and founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, argued then that it was a partnership with governments and operators to help everyone into the opportunities access to the web, including millions in India.

You are running out of room for innovation in the iPhone?

Tim Cook jumps on stage with barely concealed enthusiasm. Over a subsequent surfeit of figures, in which the wizard to Keynote (or follower streaming) looks completely overwhelmed, finally comes the most awaited moment: the CEO of Apple proudly displays a new version of iPhone. Everyone observes absorbed the new device and the first thing that happens to one's head is "not like the previous one?".
We enter a cumbersome lot: why Apple has changed so little design your smartphone since the initial release, compared to other manufacturers like Samsung who have ventured to try, for instance with curved screens. One possible explanation resides in that by keeping the same profile design, the learning curve may be lower for users who jump from previous versions. Come on, that the new iPhone in hand, one is not lost without knowing how to use it.

The good news comes in the form of direct death sentence by Evan traditional black band, which imposed the corporate presence in front of the terminals of the mark. Something that over time has become one of the most common accusations facing the conservative design of the brand.
